Round 1. A1 - Berwick 14 def Mornington 1 The Dodgers defying there usual early season tardiness burst out of the blocks in the first innings scoring 3 on a walk and 3 hits and with another 3 in the 3rd innings on home runs to Lucas Price and Rob Hogan the game was out of the Pirates reach. Eventually the Dodgers racked up 14 runs on 15 hits with everyone getting involved. Starting pitcher Glen Richards struck out 10 and conceded just 2 hits through 5 innings of work and with 2 innings of solid relief from debutant JJ O'Connor and one from Mick Wearne the Dodgers managed to concede just the 1 run. Amongst the hits for the Dodgers were JJ O'Connor 3, R Hogan, L Price, G Mascoll, S Wearne and G Richards 2, B Bartlett and L Farrelly 1 A2 - Berwick 16 def Mornington 2 A new look Dodgers team took the field with a combination of younger players a couple of new guys and some wily veterans and started well with a couple of runs in the 1st, the Pirates struck back with 1 of their own but the Dodgers took advantage of some errant pitching and some strong batting to score another 13 in the next 2 innings to put the result beyond doubt. Starting pitcher Sean Howe was reliable as ever allowing only 2 hits in his 3 innings and was well supported by some solid defence, relief pitcher Alex De Silva closed out the game to complete a solid first up win. Best hitters for the Dodgers were Matt Bostok 2, Matt Pallant, Sam Beasley and John O'Connor with 1 each A3 - Berwick 13 def Mornington 9 After a slow start and giving up 6 runs in the first innings, we made a couple of changes and slowly got back into the game winning 13 - 9. Paul Quinn did extremely well catching and backing up with 4 hits. Team Gibbo junior was promoted to the number 2 batting spot and had a day out picking up 3 hits and scoring 3 runs. Krystle Pyke also played really well both in the field and getting 2 hits.Andrew Peulen came on and pitched the last 5 innings and completly stopped Morningtons run scoring. A4 - Berwick 8 drew Mornington 8 Well we are off again on the 2008 journey. It was a case of old favourites and new boys As we excitedly prepared at Cyril Molyneaux to start the season rolling against the Mornington Pirates. Paul Chinnock took the mound and after a nervous start struck out 3 hitters to get out of the 1 st dig after giving up 3 runs. Our hitting was a little rusty but we managed to squeak in 2 runs in reply. Pauly settled down in the 2 nd . Backed up by some unorthodox but effective 1 st base plays from new boys Marty Kmet and Steve Price we managed to slow the Pirates run flow. The game meandered along until the 5 th inning when Pauly struggled to retire and we went into the bottom of the inning 4 runs down with 16 minutes to play. It was then the Pirates turn to try and hold us, but their pitcher couldn't find the zone putting our batters on base before Willy Carpenter set us up for the win with a very timely triple bagger to tie it up. Unfortunately we couldn't cap it off and the game finished on time as an 8 - 8 draw. We could not really have expected to win with only 2 hits for the game (Brett Antione was the only other hitter with a 2 RBI single), but our baserunning and defence in the main was pleasing. Next week we play Monash away at midday Saturday. We have a few more old favourites returning, so with a bit of luck we may rack up a few more hits. Till then – see you on the diamond. Roger Greene
An under-manned side from both Cheltenham and Berwick fought out a good game at home but unfortuneately lost 8 - 10. Lead-off Craig Barnett continued his good batting from summer and picked up 2 hits and scored 2 runs. First gamers, Brett Klimisch hit in 2 R.B.I's and young Andre Ackaoui played brilliantly in the field with 5 put-outs.Other good hitting came from Andrew Hemmes, 2 hits, and Sam Beasley with 1. Under 14 - Berwick 8 def Cheltenham 6 The U14 team had a good start to the season with an 8 - 6 win. The boys were down for the entire match 1 - 6 until a late rally with 7 runs in the 4 th inning. Cheltenham batted strongly for the entire match but the team was able to withstand the pressure until time and game was called. Jesse Gavin started the game and pitched really well, and will be better for the outing. Matthew Chilcott came in to relieve and threw well closing out the game . The teams hitting was slow to start with but then the bats came alive, with all players batting aggressivley scoring the 7 runs needed to take the lead. Matthew Clydesdale started the run feast with a disciplined walk which inspired the team. Great first up effort for Paul Klimisch who played well for his first game. Hits: Matthew Chilcott 2, Jesse Gavin 1, Dean McCort 1, David Mulhall 1, Jake Bone 1. Under 12 - Berwick 2 lost to Dandenong 22
