Round 10.

A1 - Berwick

A2 - Berwick 8 def. Bonbeach 0.

We all love winter baseball. We love the crispness in the air. We love the raindrops falling on our heads. We love the squelch of the mud under our feet as we run and turn and slip and fall in the mud. Ahhh winter baseball………SMELL THE SERENITY !!

With Dykstra having been promoted to the firsts, and Crackers away on a school camp (that’s what he told his folks), I had to call upon the skills of Sam Beasley to catch. A tough ask I know, but I had very little doubt that he would be up to the task.

With Bull on the hill, Sammy behind the dish, Double ( hopefully not a cameo appearance…welcome back Double) at first, Puss at second, Dan at third, Jack at short stop, Chilly at left, Jessie at centre and Rouser at right things got off to a solid beginning as it was 3 up & 3 down for the Bonbeach batters. In the bottom of the inning the Dodger bats came out swinging, resulting in a Dodger lead of 3-0 after the first.

Bull continued to dominate on the hill, and the Dodger bats continued to pound the ball, scoring through all but 1 inning of the 5 played. Bull was again involved in a red card situation, thankfully he was just the innocent hitter of a home run, called by the umpire in the middle of the diamond, that bounced allegedly, 100cm short of the home run fence. The Bonbeach centre fielder was removed from the game for continually suggesting to the umpires that they go out and check the mark.

Overall, a good display with the bat across the entire game. Bull finished with 3 from 3 (incl HR), Rouser, Puss, Sammy, Jack, Dan and Jessie all got among the hits.

Next week we are in the Tomato patch.

See you on the Diamond

A3 - Berwick 0 lost to Bonbeach 5.

When we arrived an Bonbeach for the game, werent sure if we were going to play because of the rain or not, but it was cold. Unfortunately we didn't bring our Mojo, losing 5-0. There was not a lot of high-lights in the game as we were outclassed by the Bonbeach pitcher with only 3 hits for the game, singles to Sean, Cam R and to the bunt-master Rene. Mark Howe started his first game for the season and toiled admirably for 6 innings. BB then came on and unleashed the gas, combined with mind blowing curve balls for 2 innings that bamboozled the opposition, even got a "K".

A4 - Berwick 9 drew with Bonbeach 9.

This week we travelled to a cold and wet Bonbeach in a must win game to keep our season alive. I stressed the importance of a positive start and putting some scoreboard pressure on the opposition early. We did exactly that, posting 3 runs in the first. With Brian Lees on the hill we tried to put the clamp on the Bonbeach hitters. We continued to bat the ball but a few errors once again allowed Bonbeach to gain some momemtem. Try as we might we failed to keep the runs ticking along behind a standout batting game from catcher (and banjo soloist) Paul Chinnock 3 hits including a 2 run bomb and 3 RBI’s. Backed up by master 1st baseman Glenn De Jong, Mighty Mick Leembruggen and Terry Van Iersel all with 2 hits. As time was closing, so was Bonbeach and as time elapsed with 2 out they managed to tie it up. Final score Berwick 9 Bonbeach 9. Well done to both teams. Next week we host our nemesis from last year Frankston.

Till then – see you on the diamond.

Roger Greene.

Under 16 - Berwick 1 drew with Dandenong 1.

A tight defensive game was played at Dandenong this weekend and after the game was reverted back we could only manage a drew 1-1. Jesse Gavin took to the mound and threw the whole only allowing the one run. The batting wasn't at its normal standard with only 1 hit for the to Turtle.
