It was a very damp tomato patch that was the site for what will become known in folklore as the day when the:
Tomatoes became Relish
The baseball God of hitting was looking down upon the Dodger hitters in the first inning, as we had 13 at bats to produce 7 hits and score 7 runs. Almost everyone got a hit in this dig, those that didn’t either walked or produced a sac fly to advance and score runners.
There was no need to disturb the baseball God of pitchers, we had our own God of sorts on the hill. The wily skill of Michael Wearne was way too clever for the tomato hitters. Wearnie worked for all 8 innings, amassing 9 K’s, giving up 6 hits and 3 runs. Nice work Michael, I think you should have a holiday for a couple of weeks; I will take you off the roster.
The hitting continued throughout most of the Dodger batting innings. The number of runners left on base was just a tiny bit of a concern. We need to concentrate a little more on situation hitting to avoid leaving runners stranded. The top teams will punish us if we leave just half as many on base against them, as we did on Saturday.
With 18 hits and no errors for the day it was a very solid hitting and fielding effort on the weekend. Multiple hits to Jack, Quinstar (good party Saturday night buddy), Bull, Wearnie, Sammy and Rouser.
Next week we have the ladder leading Angels at home.
See you on the Diamond

A3 - Berwick 8 lost to Frankston 9.
C'mon Hilly, I know you read the reports every week, so where is it.
A4 - Berwick 3 lost to Frankston 11.
We hosted the Frankston Tomatos on a sodden “Cyril” with drizzling rain throughout the 2 hours. With 14 players and a very crabby coach huddled in the dug out we took to the field behind Brian “Beefa” Lees good form of recent weeks and the game was on. As is always the case these 2 teams always have a tight tussell, and this looked to be another in the series under the damp conditions. Lead of “Lil” Mick Leembruggen lead us off in his usual manner but struggling with a tight hamstring had to withdraw in the second dig. This bought Craig Taylor in for his first run in a month. More about Craig later. With “Beefa: and “Snoop” going head to head the game was tied at 3 a piece after the first hour. Jess Lees and Kristol Pyke were solid in the infield with Jess picking up a nice hit to go head to head with “Beefa”. Sammy O’Conner belted a 2 run triple and TV picked up his customary double, but the man I want to “focus” on is Craig “ the angry ant” Taylor, who was beamed the next at bat after coming off a hit and wanted to “sort it out” with the pitcher, then after composing himself, steals second only to be given out with the umpire making one of his less memorable calls.
To Craigs credit, he, although upset left the diamond without dispute. Craig showed us all that although the game was as good as lost, he was still prepared to have a “Red Hot Go” right up until the last out, it is a real pity that he didn’t have too many mates out there last Saturday with the same mindset. We picked up a paultry 5 hits for the game, not good enough at any level. Our fielding in the conditions was not special, but the clear highlights were an inning ending double play (the first for a long while) and a towering fly ball “cherry” to “Big Fella” Brett Antoine. We will need to bring our bats as next up we face league leader Dandenong away.
Till then – see you on the diamond.
Roger Greene.
Womens - Berwick 24 def. Moorabin 1.
Another fun filled Sunday saw the Dodgers come out firing, belting a whopping 23 hits for the game. There was a spread of hits to Shae, Tay, Mandi, Jess, Cass, Wig, Gab, and Sabrina, with everyone contributing.
But the day belonged to Shae Lillywhite and Mandi Avent. Shae going an amazing 6 from 6, including an in the park home run, and Mandi playing her first game of the season and going 4 from 4. A fantastic hitting display from two ex Chelsea teammates who ensured the team would cruise to victory.
In the field some great defence led by Gill at third, Tay at short and some handy work by Jess at first base. Also some great plays in the outfield by Mandi and Gab.
Next week we take on Monash, with a win almost securing us second spot on the ladder come finals time.
Good luck to Jenna who will miss the next month due to a holiday in Europe. We wish her well and look forward to her return.
Next Week: Berwick v Monash Uni @ Carrum Downs 10am
