Coming up to the business end of the season we needed to ensure our spot in the four, so we had no other option other than starting Scotty on the hill again. After yet another solid outing he finished with 9 inns, 7 hits, 3 walks and 6 strike outs, but it was our defence again letting us down with some errors and our inability to finish the job once our runners are in scoring position. Best hitters for the day Bonas 2, Scotty, Quinny and Cosmo 1.
Hope all went well with the operation Fuzz and we look forward to you coming back in the next couple of weeks.
A2 - Berwick 8 def. Dandenong 6.
In a game with tough conditions Dandenong came out with a point to prove on the field. Scoring 3 runs in the first 2 inns it was up to our hitters to start doing the same, but Dandenong struggled to throw us strikes and we finished up with just 3 hits but receiving 19 walls for the game. Mick threw well as usual giving up 11 hits and only 2 walks for 6 innings. Best hitters for the day were John 2 and Sean 1.
A3 - Berwick 0 lost to Frankston 11.
On a cold saturday afternoon, we arrived at Frankston where the A4 team were playing in the rain, but fortuneately the rain subsided and we weren't in the race, losing 11 - 1. There weren't a lot of highlights, but there were two parts of the game worth mentioning. Thanks to Bull hitting a double through the cones, stopped "Old Man" Ando from throwing a no-hitter, we wouldn't have heard the last of it if he did, a shut-out is tough enough to swallow. After the coach started the game and got caned, Andrew Hemmes came on, after a 2 month break, and did extremely well only giving up 1 earned run.
A4 - Berwick 7 lost to Frankston 8.
We travelled to a sodden and windswept Patch at Frankston on Saturday with only eight of the 17 listed available to play a crunch game against a highly competitive Frankston. We managed to start in blustery and raining conditions and Simone Wearne battled hard but held the opposition early. Our depleted hitting line up struggled but we couldn't break through. Frankston capitalised and blew the game open as we approached the first hour scoring at least 4 runs on errors to lead 8 – 1. Shayne Nyholm Hunter relieved Simone and the rain stopped as our spirits lifted and we started to hit and run the bases hard. Willy Carpenter topped of a solid game with a 3 run triple that was almost an inside the parker until he ran into the tag at home plate. That left us a run down but with an inning to take our shot at pinching another off the Tomatoes. Both pitchers had other ideas and no further runs were added. Final score Frankston 8 Berwick 7. Shunter, Simone and Steve Johnson all had great games in the dismal conditions. This puts us behind the 8 ball now as we host the improving Dingley Blue next week.
Till then – see you on the diamond.
Roger Greene.
Womens - Berwick 11 def. Sandringham 7.
After all the confusion of what time our game was, we ended up at our normal time 12.30 against Sandringham, who are a pleasure to play against, they are a very nice, fun team. With a BIG thankyou to Cas, Gabby and Simone for giving up part of a wedding to play so we wouldn't be short and we didn't let them down. leading off to bat was Berwick. Scoring 1 run. Deb being our lead off pitcher, with one of the best pitching mounds i have seen....NOT( i don't know how you did it pitchers) anyway, Deb doing a great job with the ground we had. Jess Lees taking a couple of great catches out in Left field. Some good work by Leanne Shane on first base.great catching from Kristol. Good batting by Berwick this week, well done to Simone, Leanne, Jess. Good stealing from Gabby this week. Over all we had a great win from Women's team, keeping us in 4th place 11 to 7.
Well done Ladies. Next game is at our home ground at 3.00 against Melbourne Uni.
Hope to see you all down there.
Under 16 - Berwick 12 def. Boneo 2.
The boys took on a depleted Boneo team this week and came away with a 12 - 2 win. Other hits went to Woody with 3, Craig B with 2 and singles to Sam, Turtle, Craig D and Scott. Chilly and Jesse controlled the pitching with 6 strike-outs and only 2 runs between them.
