Round 14.

A1 - Berwick

A2 - Berwick 24 def. Boneo 0.

At our glorious home field, where the outfield is starting to resemble a footy field, we faced up against the young, inexperienced but improving Boneo Braves outfit.

The game was delayed for 15 minutes or so due to the cyclonic rain that was pelting the field (not!!!). But to their credit, the umpires got the game underway …. and the Dodgers game out a'blazin.

Following Mick's 1, 2, 3 of Boneo in the top of the first, the Dodgers went Herbie. 20 batters, a handful of walks, countless hits, 15 runs. Ok, not all the runs were earnt, but still, the majority of runs were scored through good batting.

The game got a little bland as you would imagine, with the only tension being whether after another rain delay, we would play enough time or innings for it to constitute a game. Fortunately we did, running away with a 24-0 win.

Mick was solid as always on the hill, going through 4 innings before there was a baserunner for Boneo. Mick & Sean Fahy were also the best of the batters, with four hits each.

A3 - Berwick 4 drew with Dingley Blue 4.

The A3 team with 14 players took on an always dangerous Dingley Blue team and with the pitchers dominating the game, ended in a 4-4 draw. Once again, Sean Howe took to the mound and did a awesome job for the whole 9 innings, containing the Dingley bats to 3 earned runs and picking up 10 strike-outs along the way. After Dingley scored the first run, young Benny Rosewall hit a stand up double which scored 2 runs and put us into the lead. Dick and Lucas "Cover Drive" Lydall got into the hits also with 2 each and singles to Benny and Cam McRae, who did a sensational job at second base with 3 put-outs and 3 assists.

Mental errors and lapses in concentration cost us dearly, especially "Hitting to Situation" with 13 runners left on base throughout the game. If we cut these errors down to a minimum, we can beat anybody in the A3 competition.

A4 - Berwick 10 def. Dingley Blue 7.

We travelled to Wearne field to play the Dingley Blue in drizzling conditions. After a pre-match chat the team resolved to enjoy whatever eventuated against the “Blues”. We started well with the bat taking an early 3 runs lead in the first. The match was a heavyweight clash between “Beefa” and “Buddha”. The Dingley guys came back at us and tied it at 3 all after the 1 st. Our hitting continued and we eased away from the “Blues” with our momentum rolling nicely and our defence solid behind “Beefa”.

A calf muscle tear to Mick “Fish” Whiting after a crucial hit, necessitated a line up change but we held firm and powered on. Highlights defensively with scrambling outs at 1 st by Sammy O’Conner, a steepling fence fly from “Stevie Johnston” and some Classic PK at third base held us in good stead in defence as Beefa picked up the “go to whoa” win Berwick 10 Dingley Blue 7. Our hitting which had deserted us in the previous 2 weeks was “back in town”. With 2 hits to Beefa, Sammy, Lil Mick and Craig Taylor knocking in 7 runs between them and PK clubbing in the other 3 runs. But my personal highlight was the hardest hit ground ball that I have ever seen from Brett “Big Fella” Antoine. I guess that we all just learned to love the game again. Next week we travel to Cheltenham to spread the love.

Till then – see you on the diamond.

Roger Greene.
