In a great conclusion to the home and away season the Dodgers played solid defence all day and came up with some clutch hits when they were needed to notch up our 8th cosecutive victory and guarentee top spot on the ladder for the first time ever and secure what promises to be a fantastic first semi final at Berwick next Sunday afternoon at 2.00pm Glen Richards started again and was strong through 6 innings giving up just 2 runs when the Bluejays managed to string together a couple of their 6 hits in the 3rd, closer Scott Wearne picked up the save with 3 innings of quality work. Best of the hitters were Luke Farrelley, JJ O'Conner and Adam Silva with 2, Glen Mascoll and Peter Higgins with 1
A2 - Berwick 8 drew with Bonbeach 8.
A dissapointing end to the season with the Dodgers unable to get into the game at any stage, with the double chance on the line the coach was hoping for more from a team that had performed so well throughout the year, sloppy defence and some below par hitting against some pretty average pitching left the Dodgers just short of the victory they needed, hopefully the team can regain the spark for next weeks semi final against the Tomatoes at Berwick at 2.00pm on Saturday Best hitters were Rob Hogan, Andrew Peulan and Sam Beasley with 2 and Mick Wearne, Ben Bartlett, Shaun Fahy and Brad Hughes with 1
A3 - Berwick 12 def. Dingley Gold 2.
The boys played winless Dingley and came away with a 12-2 win in what was a very enjoyable game played in great spirit by both teams. The team excercised several rules throughout the game such as, if the pitcher threw 2 walks he would be replaced, if a pitcher looked to impressive on the mound and dominated the opposition, especially a 4 pitch innings from Rowza, was replaced. So in saying that, we went through 5 pitchers on the day with debuts from Andrew Gibbens and Campbell McRae. In the batting, the team batted properly for the first 2 innings and in the 3rd, had to bat from the opposite side which proved to be quite interesting and extremely funny. We should do that more often as we scored 3 runs for the innings, getting 4 safe hits and 1 HPB, poor Cam "Gun Rightie" Boucher couldn't get out of the way fast enough and got hit in the middle of his shoulder blades. In a game that was enjoyed by both teams and the umpires, was made more enjoyable with the coach finding a golf ball and starting to throw it around to each player on the field between pitches, and nearly became a fool when running away to get the golf ball behind him and looking around only discovering that the real baseball was hit out to him and just catching it around his knees. Hits going to the "Gun Leftie/Rightie" with 3 safe hits, 2 hits to Rowan and Gibbo Jnr and singles to the coach, Dick, Symbol, Andrew H and Glenn Gittus, who did a superb job behind the dish for 7 innings catching some pretty disgraceful pitching.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Margie, our scorer who keeps me in line, to all the supporters who came each week in some very ordinary conditions and to the A4 team for supporting us after their game. Thanks to all, BB.
A4 - Berwick 4 lost to Dingley Gold 25.
We travelled to Wearne field to play 2 nd placed Dingley Gold. It was an opportunity to polish our skills prior to our finals campaign. As it turned out we used up a whole seasons worth of errors in all positions and left Beefa to walk off the hill 10 runs down after the first dig. Waving it off as an abberration, I watched as we continued to struggle to come to grips with the situation and a dubious call at second to end our batting in the second was the last straw. It has been a relatively quiet year regarding the coach talks. All of that changed on Saturday. After a tirade that almost scared myself, the team lifted their rating and produced the type of baseball that I know they are capable of. Hits to Porno, Glenn, Roy and Beefa as usual with 2 hits and a very surly battle with the pitcher to Shunter showed me that the fire still burns. We relieved Beefa with Rookie Glenn De Jong for his first stint on the hill who impressed veteran catcher TV with his style. Roy “The Natural” Huke closed the show with his annual appearance on the hill. Final score Berwick 4 Dingley Gold 25 in a game that dissolved in the gale force winds. Unfortunately Brucey Cusack broke his good finger fielding at second and will be restricted to base coaching only in the finals. We now face Frankston at the Tomato Patch Saturday at 2 pm and hope to see a few fans there as we start our finals push.
Till then – see you on the diamond.
Roger Greene.
Womens - Berwick 0 lost to Melbourne Uni 10.
WELL WELL WELL, who would have thought that we would have made the finals...we have finished 4th which means we're in!!! We will be playing Doncaster, we have to win to stay in. For our last game, we headed off to St Kilda for a 10am game, against Melbourne Uni. Simone on the pitching mound only keeping them to a 4 run game, and a few of those were unearned too. On the bat this week was Jolene, Gill, Kristol, Deb and any one else i forgot, as i usually do. Great fielding this week again from Leanne on 1st base and Cas at 3rd base. Great backing up from Jolene and Gabby. Great job from Kristol behind the plate. And a big well done to Gabby for relieving Simone on the mound. Did a great job Gabby, well done. Going down to Melbourne Uni, 10 to 0. Over all we have had a great season, and i would like to take this opportunity to thank Mick, Simone Sharni and Hope for all their help through the season, we wouldn't have got here with out you.
