Round 5.

A1 - Berwick 2 lost to Cheltenham 8.

In a disappointing game we went down to Cheltenham 8-2. With Chelt only managing 3 more hits than us it was the lack of strikes that allowed the Rustlers to have multiple base runners when they did get one of their hits. Best hitters for the day were Ferret, Higgo, Bonas and Cosmo all with 1 a piece. Lets hope we bring our bats next week against Dingley.

A2 - Berwick 7 def Cheltenham 3.

After last weeks win we needed to string 2 together. We were out hit 11-2 but it was our fielding that allowed us to walk away with the 7-3 win. Outstanding fielding to John O'Connor with 8 assists at 3 rd base and Sam who ran down 3 flyballs. Well done to Mick for throwing the entire game with no walks. Best hitters and our only hitters for the day were Mick and Sam.

A3 - Berwick 4 lost to Frankston 21.

In a game that you would write off to experience, the boys got crunched losing to Frankston 21 - 4. Not a lot of highlights except for another huge hit from the Bull over centre field fence for a home run and Hoges picking up 3 hits for the game. Other hits went to Dick, Rowan, Tooly and Andrew H.

A4 - Berwick 9 def. Frankston 8.

We hosted reigning premier Frankston on Saturday with our 2 pocket rockets “Lil” Mick Leembruggen and Roy “the Natural” Huke unavailable we had to totally rejig the top order. I started Beefa Lees who gave us everything he had and the game progressed at the usual pace with our defence tested early, we hung in, matching it with the Tomatoes who managed to hold sway after 4 innings. It was then that Simone Wearne relieved “Beefa” and we managed to slow the opposition bats behind Simone's accurate arm. Both Steve Johnson and Paul “Porno” Chinnock kept the momentum building with Porno pushing Johnno home in front of his return inside the park home run and giving us a 2 run buffer late in proceedings. Frankston came back at us hard and we could not stop them tying it up. We failed to wrest back the lead and with 10 minutes remaining I was resigned to the fact that our chance had passed. It was then that fate smiled on us and holding the strong hitters of Franskton to 8 runs we were given 5 minutes to break the game. Steve Johnson was ordered to swing at every pitch and picked up his 2 nd safe hit to first. ‘Porno' Chinnock then tagged his 4 th hit of the day behind “Johnno” in motion to second base, as the ball cleared the infield. “Johnno” dug deep and headed to round third then thundered toward home. The incoming throw was right on the money as Johnno slid in, but the catcher failed to glove the ball and an unlikely victory was ours. Final score Berwick 9 Frankston 8. The aggressive base running, self confidence and belief that I have been hammering into this team had finally surfaced and will now hold this team in good stead for the rest of the season. Solid performances from “PK”, “Shunter” “TV” and “Willy” kept us on track all day and cannot go without mention. I would like to thank Craig Taylor who although unavailable due to a tight hamsting called his first game and did a great job.Next up we face Dingley Blue away.

Till then – see you on the diamond.

Roger Greene.

Womens - Berwick 8 def. Doncaster 4.

Off to Essendon this week for a 10.00 o'clock game against Doncaster.  With the expertise of Simone Wearne helping us out today with Mick being away.  With being the home team, we started off fielding first, with Shae at the mound taking control of the game early with a K2 and a catch, then some great fielding by Shae started Doncaster off with 0 runs. Then it was our turn to bat, with Kristol being lead off batter with a Dropped third strike and aggressive running from Kristol getting on base, next up was Gill with a hit to left field, scoring Kristol, then HOME RUN SHAE up next and not to disappoint hits yet another home run, scoring another 2 runs.  Jess up next, getting on base, and Cas getting on base, but ended up being left on base, but brining the score to Berwick 3, Doncaster 0. Out we go again, still with Shae at the mound, starting off with 2 K2's and a fielding out from Jess at first, again leaving Doncaster with 0 runs. Doncaster shut us down in this innings with 0 runs scored.   3 innings fielding, pitching on fire still with Shae, with their first batter getting on base from an error from Gill at short stop, then a K2 from Shae, a couple of safe hits and a home run from Doncaster, bringing them 3 runs in.  Shae then shutting them down with another 2 K2's.  Making the score 3 all. Having another bat was Shae on a mission to get that home run back that was hit off her, again did not disappoint, smashing the ball to left field and some aggressive running scoring another home run.  Jess then hits the ball out to left field making a triple, then to come home on a pass ball, Mel getting hit by the pitch, leaving a nice mark on the leg, but got left on base.  But another 2 runs in for Berwick. Shae starting off where she left off, with another K2, then a hit to Gill getting the runner out at 2nd base with the assistance from Mel.  Then another K2, from Shae, shutting them down again with 0 runs scored. 0 runs scored from our next at bat. A great start from Doncaster hitting a nice hit over Deb's head at left field but rolled under the fence for a 2 base hit.  Then 3 straight strike outs from Shae, leaving them with 0 runs scored again. With a walk to Gill, then going out with an attempted steal, Shae up to bat next hitting a double to centre, a hit from Jess to bring Shae home, few more walks, then a hit from Deb, bringing another run in, giving us 3 runs this innings. A hit to Jess on 1st base, getting the out, then a hit to left field getting Doncaster a runner on base, but a great throw from Kristol behind the plate to Gill at 2nd base, getting the out from an attempted steal, then a hit to Shae, throwing to Jess getting the 3rd out. Last bat for us, leaving us with a scoreless innings.  But one more at bat for Doncaster, with a safe hit to Short stop, then a hit from another batter getting the runner to 3rd, then a great catch from Gabby, then one last K2 from Shae but time and game then called so the run also doesn't score as the inning was finished with 2 out.  So the inning was not counted. But final result was a fantastic win to Berwick on 8 and Doncaster 4.  Awesome game from Shae again, with 12 Strike outs, 2 home runs and a double.  Also a great effort from Jess, Deb,Mel and Gabby. Well done ladies, let's keep the winning role happening.

Next game  against Monash this week at our home ground.  3.00pm start.

Under 16 - Berwick 17 def. Mornington 2.

The boys took on Mornington at home, coming away with a convincing 17 - 2 win. Some sensational hitting with Sam Beasley, Jesse Gavin and Woody all slamming "Over the cone" home runs. Other hits went to, in form Tim Evans and Craig Durdin with 2 each and a single to Anthony Mether. The Chilcott / Gavin pitching combination did it again keeping Mornington to 2 runs.
