A dissapointing day for the Dodgers who took on 5th placed Dingley knowing a win would consolidate a spot in the top four, for 8 innings the Dodgers played great baseball taking a comfortable 8 - 3 lead into the ninth inning and needing just three outs for the victory, unfortunately we couldnt get the job done allowing Dingley 5 runs to tie up the game and not being able to score over the next 2 innings we gave up the winning run in the 11th, Scott Wearne did a great job throwing all 11 innings and picking up 3 hits other hitters for the day were Matt Greene 3, Glen Mascoll, Glen Richards, Matt Pallant and Rob Hogan 2 and JJ O'Conner and Luke Farrelly 1
A2 - Berwick 13 def Dingley 3.
In another important game, the young Dodger team stood up again playing solid defence and after a slow start putting together some great hitting innings and scoring plenty of runs to end the contest early with a ten run win against some very competent opposition. Sam Beasley did a great job behind the dish in the absence of regular catcher Ben Bartlett and with regular starter Sean Howe unavailable due to work the Dodgers pitching depth showed through holding the strong Dingley line up. Best with the bats were Mick Wearne 3 and Peter Higgins, Dan Betreen, Jack Spiers, John O'Conner,Adam Silva and Matt Bostock 2 each
A3 - Berwick 12 lost to Dingley 18.
The boys took on fourth place Dingley and even with 17 hits for the game, were unable to get the win losing 18-12. Every player got hits, except for the coach, with muliples to Darren 3, Dick, Brad, Gibbo Jnr and Bull, hitting a huge shot over the centre field fence for a grand slam home run, with 2. Defensively, we let Bull down who threw well for 71/2 innings, including an extremely rare "Three pitch" innings. Next week we take on ladder leaders, Bonbeach at Bonbeach.
A4 - Berwick 5 lost to DIngley 10.
In overcast conditions with the threat of showers we prepared to host highly placed Dingley on Saturday. Once again we started poorly giving up 5 runs on 2 hits and 3 errors before “Beefa” Lees claimed the first out. We started brightly with the bat , but a lack of successive hitting meant we could only score the 1 run, leaving runners stranded in what would become the theme for the day. After the first dig the game evened out with Simone Wearne relieving “Beefa” after 3 innings and keeping Dingley to a gettable total. “Willy” Carpenter turned in a solid performance backing up his extra base hitting with some fine flyball catching. Once again we ran all 15 players available in the 2 hours but we were chasing the 5 runs we gave up in the 1 st . when time ran out. Final score Dingley 10 Berwick 5. It was good to see Peter “PK” Kimber and “Brucey” Cusack back in action to shut down a late charge from Dingley.
Next week we complete the first round when we travel to Bonbeach. Thanks to Quinney for lining for us, Deb Barnett for running the scorebook and Craig Durdin turned in a great game calling the strikes.
Until next week – see you on the diamond.
Roger Greene.
Under 16 - Berwick 20 def Oakleigh 1
The boys took on Oakleigh this week and came away with a resounding win, scoing 20 runs to 1. Andrew Hemmes pitched extremely well for 4 innings, with 5 strike-outs, only conceding 1 run. The bats came alive with 16 hits for the game with multiples going to Craig Barnett with 3, Adam Silva, Andrew Hemmes, Anthony Mether, Ryan Shane and Craig Durdin with 2 each.
Under 14 - Berwick 5 def Dandenong 4.
With being the away team we were the first up to bat, lead off batter being Ethan Laurie, hitting a 2 base hit out into left field, with a few walks from other batters and a hit to centre field by Dean McCort and the help of wild pitch from their pitcher we scored 3 runs. Our lead off pitcher was Daniel Wood with 2 strike outs 1 hit and some good fielding from Jesse at first base putting Dandenong's first inning with no runs. 2nd inning batting was Daniel Durdin up next with a safe hit to left field, then a hit from Matthew Clydesdale straight to the pitcher who got him out at 1st base, then 2 strike outs with our next 2 batters, making the 3rd out, leaving Daniel on base. 2nd inning pitching from Daniel was just as amazing, with their first batter hitting a safe hit to left field but with some more strike outs from Daniel shutting them down again with no runs. 3rd inning batting, was Samuel Drane with getting a walk to first base, David Mulhall getting caught with a fly ball, Paul Klimisch striking out but swinging the bat, then Ethan Laurie getting a walk to first base, then a fly ball from Daniel Wood being caught making the 3rd out, leaving us with no runs scored again so the score being 3 to 0 our way still. Daniel Woods final inning for pitching shutting them down again with some great fielding from the team, with leaving them with 0 runs. 4th inning batting was Jake Bone with a safe hit to left field, a few walks, scoring us 2 unearned runs giving us 5 runs. Our next pitcher for the game was Jesse Gavin, who gave up a few walks and a few wild pitches, with them scoring 4 unearned runs, Matthew Chilcott came in to shut them down, leaving them with just the 4 runs. So with a close call, Berwick still came up with the win, with some awesome pitching from Daniel Wood, and great fielding by the whole team, and some great batting by the team it was a confident win. Again there is no games for the U/14's next week. Doing a great job boys keep up the great team work!!!!
