Round 8.

A1 - Berwick

A2 - Berwick 4 lost to Cheltenham 7.

The first real winter day, proved to be cold, glum and very very dangerous.

We have all heard the rumours that have been circulating for years and years. Rumours that seem so fanciful. Rumours that when you are first told, you just shake your head, laugh and reply with “as if.”

Well on Saturday afternoon, I saw with my own two eyes, one of those rumours come to life. I have heard many many times about the “Big Black Hole” that just swallows up any player’s ability on any given day. Saturday was the day when the ‘Big Black Hole” at short stop chewed up and spat out the abilities of 3 Berwick players, across three innings.

Shaun Fahy on the hill worked as hard as possible to have simple ground balls hit to fielders, but the “Big Black Hole” ensured that his work was to no avail.

Berwick hitters managed just 5 hits for the day. It was Shaun again who led the way with 2, Toole, Jack and Puss with 1 each. Dan showed patience in the box and extracted 2 walks. Special mention to Crackers who put down an impeccable bunt advancing runners to scoring positions.

In the end we went down 7-4. ( Of the 7 runs only 2 earned )

Good luck to Chilly who heads to Mildura for the carnival next weekend.

Our next game is against the Dingoes on their patch.

See you on the Diamond

A3 - Berwick 3 lost to Cheltenham 7.

On the first real wet day of the season, we took on the league leaders and with the heavens opening up in the 5 th innings, Cheltenham had the lead after the 65th minute and we went down 7-3. Sean Howe started the game and toiled hard in the rain and cold, good effort Sean. In the hitting, only Shae and Dick got hits for the game. It was unfortuneate that the game was called early, as we were getting on top and it would have been interesting if the game went the whole 9 innings.

Well done boys.

A4 - Berwick - 7 lost to Cheltenham 9.

Under gloomy, foggy skies at a damp Cyril in preparation to face off against the ever competitive Cheltenham. With both teams light on numbers Sammy O’Conner was our starter for what may be the last time for a while and the tussel began. Through the first 2 inning the game was competeitve and a close fought battle, with Mick Leembruggen, Paul Chinnock and Sam all picking up hits and stealing bases to keep our score ticking over. In the 3 rd. we swung Brian Lees onto the mound and Cheltenham fired up putting a 3 run buffer between the teams. With our turn to bat we made the most of the walks and hit batters that came our way as the Rustlers pitcher was struggling with the zone. With bases loaded and none out we failed to cash in , only posting 1 run as the rustlers shut us down. This became the final score of Berwick 7 – Cheltenham 9. Once again we couldn’t match our opposition in the second hour. Paul Chinnock tried valliantly to halt the Rustlers charge before Brad Hughes came in to get the last out. We turn at the break 2 wins 6 losses, nothing short of a miracle will see us in the post season action, but we will continue to graft and see what pans out Saturday week.

Till then – see you on the diamond.

Roger Greene.

Womens - Berwick 8 lost to Footscray 9.

In the final game of Round 1, the Dodger girls were unable to secure one more win to go through to Round 2 without a loss. With a new look starting 9, the girls battled hard all day – Deb again solid on the hill and giving the field a lot of opportunity to make plays in the field.

The absolute standout player of the day was Sabrina Lees, going 4 from 4 from her 5 Plate Appearances, with a walk. Everyone got amongst the hits: Kristol 2, Cass 1, Ash 1, Jenna 1, Gill 1 and Simone, Shae, Tay and Jess all coming in late in the game and securing 1 hit each.

Well done to Kristol and Shae who both did a great job behind the dish, and also to Tay and Simone who finished off the game in relief. Wig starting to find some form, finishing the last inning with 3 strike outs.

All in all, a good game of baseball. Without some of the more experienced girls on the field, the young girls really did put in, and I’m sure they will get a lot out of this game come finals time. A big well done to the Footscray girls who fought hard all day to come away with a good win. We look forward to taking the Doggies on again later in the season.

Also, must say a huge thanks to Big Kev and the girls out at Footscray who put on a bbq and raffle, with and helped raised some money for Shaeka and her World Cup Trip. Great to see another club supporting women’s baseball and helping out. Much appreciated guys!

Next Game: With two weeks off, the next game for the Berwick girls will be Sunday 27 th June @ Berwick when the girls take on Doncaster (2.30pm). Get down for this home game as the girls try to get back into the winners circle.

Under 16 - Berwick - Bye

Under 14 - Berwick 17 def. Moorabin/Pakenham 0.

Another cold away game for the under 14 Dodgers. Hayden Wood out due to a broken arm and Oliver Dunn out due to Little League Nationals. Boys were ready for a big game with two under 12 players Rydge Hogan and Jake March helping us out. Rydge was given the job behind the dish due to Brad Kmet still injured. Jake March started at second base.

Top 1 st and Dodgers score 7 runs with none out. Fill in Mat Mclardy walked, Rydge, Nick and Marchie singled, Ryan “Roo” Lowe doubled. First seven batters scored as Dodgers showed their offence was devastating. Bottom 1 st Alex Clark, put three away using Lachlan Beasley at 1 st and an assist to Mat McLardy at shortstop.

Top 2 nd Dodgers score four runs with Rydge getting a hard HPB in the helmet that made me the most scared I have ever been as a coach! He is a tough boy and made me and the whole team proud in his tough attitude and courage. Bottom 2 nd Clarky continues with the help of Marchie at second base diving and stopping a line drive and getting the out at first. Wow what a play from an under 12.

Top 3 rd Dodgers relax and a new pitcher comes on throwing good strikes. Three strikeouts and a base on balls to Brad. Score 11-0. Bottom 3 rd Clarky loses his no hitter with two hits to Moorabin under 14 and a Pakenham under 12. Dodgers then almost rolled a double and Clarky strikes out next two! Well done Clarky 3 innings 33 pitches, 26 strikes. 0 runs.

Top 4 th Dodgers score 6 runs. Double to Lachy scoring Hogan, double to Clarky scoring Lachy, single Billy Allan, Great inning by all Dodger hitters hitting the ball hard in play and scoring runs. Bottom 4 th relief specialist Steve Hughes on mound. Billy Allan in his second inning at second base then started to flash his glove, the newish boy to baseball made two ground outs then snared a line drive to right field with ease! WOW.

Top 5 th Dodgers bat out the game scoring one run that didn’t count, Double to Lachy and Steve.

Dodgers win 17-0 in a dominant game. Well done and enjoy the week off!

Dan

Under 12 - Berwick 13 def. Moorabin 4.

We were at home this week against Moorabbin, with a few of our more experienced players helping the U/14's this week, it was great game for other kids to play in a few different positions.
Our starting pitcher  was Maddog and he did a great job with striking out 6 out of 13 batters, and only giving up 2 runs.
Alot of patients at the plate this week with the batters, with a few of them getting walks and then scoring from getting on base.  We scored 3 runs in the 1st innings. In the 2nd innings, there were still quite a few walks and Maddog getting a safe hit.  Finished that innings with scoring another 5 runs.  In the last batting innings we scored another 5 runs, with another safe hit from maddog, James, Regan and Maddi.
Our last pitcher for the game was Richo, who shut them down with only scoring another 2 runs.
Great pitching from the both Liams this week, good job behind the plate catching was Jordan, some great hits from Maddog with 2, James, Maddi and Regan with 1 hit.  And alot of patients with the rest of the team.
Great scoring this week by Mel....good on you for giving it a go.

Next game is at Pakenham on the 19th.....see you all there!
